"Go Back" Opening Cinematic Short

Feb 11, 2025

"We shot the whole thing in under six hours," director Kianna Dixen shared in a recent post. You wouldn’t guess it from watching.

"Go Back" is crafted in the style of a video game opening cinematic, following a young woman as she unearths echoes of the past and falls into the shadows of a dark future. It’s a story of mystery and intrigue, but also one of hope—so much so that I wish the game it teases actually existed.

Scoring this five-minute short was an incredible experience. I aimed to strike a balance between the indie intimacy of Life Is Strange and a more filmic, cinematic approach. The music is beautiful—until a couple of notes aren’t quite right. That little touch of unease, I hope, draws the viewer deeper into the story.

Collaborating with Kianna and her director of photography (and husband), Townsend, is always a joy. Over the years, we’ve created so many magical projects together: from the Burton-esque love story of Mort. to the wholesome ghost story of Sunsprite, and the heartfelt monster-under-the-bed tale Nightlight. Their stories always strike a perfect balance between darkness and light in such a meaningful way.

I’m honored to have been a part of Go Back and can’t wait for the next one!
